ACSR vs AAAC: choosing between strength and corrosion resistance

When a line design calls for a bare overhead conductor, the choice between ACSR and AAAC comes down to a trade-off between mechanical strength, conductivity, weight and corrosion behaviour. Here is how procurement and line-design teams usually decide.

Bare overhead conductor on drums

ACSR — strength for long spans

Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced uses a galvanised or aluminium-clad steel core to carry the mechanical load, letting the aluminium strands do the conducting. That makes ACSR the workhorse for long spans and river crossings where sag and tension govern the design.

AAAC — corrosion resistance without the steel

All Aluminium Alloy Conductor replaces the steel core with a high-strength aluminium alloy. It is lighter, resists corrosion in coastal and industrial atmospheres, and avoids the bimetallic couple of a steel core — at some cost to ultimate tensile strength versus an equivalent ACSR.

How teams decide

  • Long spans, high tension → ACSR for the steel core’s strength
  • Coastal / industrial corrosion → AAAC for the alloy’s resistance
  • Weight-sensitive structures → AAAC runs lighter for the same ampacity
  • Always confirm against the specified standard — AS/NZS, IEC or ASTM

Whichever construction the design lands on, we quote against your line parameters and supply to the standard on your specification — with type-test reports before the vessel sails.
