How to read an AS/NZS 3607 conductor table

AS/NZS 3607 tabulates the stranding, dimensions and mechanical and electrical properties of aluminium and ACSR conductors. Knowing which columns matter makes it quick to confirm that what arrives on the drum matches what was specified.

Stranding and construction

The construction column gives the number and diameter of aluminium and steel wires — for example 54/7 means 54 aluminium strands over a 7-wire steel core. This fixes the conductor’s overall diameter and its aluminium-to-steel ratio, which in turn drive ampacity and strength.

Mass, breaking load and resistance

Mass per kilometre lets you check drum weights against the packing list; calculated breaking load confirms the conductor suits the line’s tension; and DC resistance at 20 °C feeds the ampacity and loss calculations for the design.
