OPGW vs ADSS: combining power and fibre on one route

When a utility wants fibre along its transmission route, the choice is usually between OPGW and ADSS. The decision turns on whether the line is new or existing, and whether it can be de-energised.

OPGW — fibre in the earth wire

Optical Ground Wire replaces the conventional earth wire with a cable that combines the shielding and earth-fault function with an optical core. It suits new lines and rebuilds, where installing at the top of the structure is part of the build.

ADSS — strung without de-energising

All-Dielectric Self-Supporting cable carries no metal, so it can be strung below the live conductors on existing structures without a shutdown. It is the usual choice for adding fibre to lines already in service.

• New line or rebuild → OPGW in the earth-wire position
• Existing energised line → ADSS strung below the conductors
• Match line fittings and hardware to span and structure
