Choosing between IEC and ASTM for export conductor

The same conductor can be specified to IEC or ASTM — and to AS/NZS, BS EN, DIN, GOST or JIS besides. The standard on the specification determines the tables the conductor is verified against, so it pays to fix it early.

IEC — the international baseline

IEC 61089 and related standards are the international reference for overhead conductor, widely accepted across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and much of Asia. Specifying to IEC keeps the widest pool of compliant supply.

ASTM — the North American system

ASTM B-series standards (B232, B524, B549 and others) define conductor for North American and aligned markets. Where a project or lender specifies ASTM, the conductor is verified against those tables.
