Control and instrumentation cable carries signal rather than power — the tripping, indication, metering and 4-20 mA loops that let a substation or process plant be operated and protected.
Because the signals are small, screening matters: individual screens keep pairs from talking to each other, and an overall screen keeps the outside world out. Armouring is added where the route is buried or exposed.
BS 5308 is the usual reference on EPC substation work; IEC and EN 50288 constructions are supplied where the project is specified to those.
